If you are new in a city it may happen that you need to ask for directions and today we’ll learn how to do so in Czech!
5-minute Czech - Beginner
There are several ways how to ask, but it is always good to start with one of the magic words we learned in the past:
Promiňte, … Excuse me, ...
Prosím / Prosím vás, … Please, ...
(when they want someone’s attention, Czech people use „Prosím vás“ more often)
Then, you can ask:
Kde je + NOMINATIV? (supermarket, knihovna, restaurace, kino)
Kde je nádraží? Where is the station?
Hledám + AKUZATIV. (supermarket, knihovnu, restauraci, kino)
Hledám hotel. I am looking for a hotel.
You can also use „nevíte“ (don’t you know) -> Promiňte, nevíte, kde je nádraží?
Here are some possible answers you may get:
To je blízko (near) / daleko (far).
- Musíte jít ... You must go /walk ...
Musíte jít rovně (straight), nahoru (up), dolů (down).
Musíte jít doleva (doprava). = Musíte zabočit / zahnout doleva (doprava).
You must turn to the left (right).
- Musíte jet ... You must drive / ride ...
Musíte jet tramvají (by tram), autobusem (by bus), metrem (by subway), vlakem (by train).
