Myslím, že ... / I think, that ... - 5-minute Czech intermediate

In today’s intermediate mini-lesson we will look at phrases you can use to share your point of view.

5-minute Czech - intermediate

Suppose you are with a group of friends discussing the pros and cons of learning Czech language. One friend says: „Myslím, že v České republice se nemusím učit česky. Můžu mluvit anglicky!“ Another friend says: „Nesouhlasím! Umět česky je praktické.“

What will you say? In today’s mini-lesson we will look at phrases you can use to share your point of view. Common phrase you have probably already seen or used:

- Myslím, že… (I think that…)

„Myslím, že nejtěžší je začít.“ (I think the most difficult thing is to start.)

There are couple more you could find useful and refreshing:

- (Pevně) věřím, že… I (firmly) believe…

„Věřím, že to dobře dopadne a zkoušku z češtiny zvládnu.“ (I believe it will go well and I will pass my Czech exam.)

- Podle mého názoru… (In my opinion…)

„Podle mého názoru je čeština krásný jazyk.“ (In my opinion, Czech is a beautiful language.)

- Řekl/řekla bych… (I would say…)

„Řekl/řekla bych, že naučit se česky je výzva!“ (I would say it is a challenge to learn Czech!)

     „Neřekl/neřekla bych.“ (I wouldn't say so.)

- Jsem přesvědčený/přesvědčená, že… (I am convinced that…)

Imagine you’ve expressed yourself. But what about the opinion of others? You can use these phrases to ask others:

- myslet si o + locative case:

„Co si myslíš o nové učebnici?“ (What do you think of the new textbook?)

- Jaký máš názor na + accusative case:

„Jaký na to máš názor?“ (What is your opinion of that?)

Finally, let’s talk about agreeing and disagreeing. To show agreement, you can say:

- „Určitě!“ (Definitely.) /„Stoprocentně souhlasím!“ (I agree one hundred per cent.)

- „Lépe bych to neřekl/a.“ (I couldn't have said it better myself.)

- „Mluvíš/mluvíte mi z duše.“ (You're taking words right out of my mouth.)

And if you disagree?

- „Nesouhlasím!“ (I disagree!)

- (inf.) „Ani náhodou!“, „Ani omylem.“ (No way.)

If you don’t know, you don’t have to stick to „Nevím.“ (I don’t know.):

- „Nejsem si jistý/jistá.“ (I’m not sure.)

- „Netuším.“, „Nemám ponětí.“ (I've no idea/clue.)

Congratulation! Now you know how to give your opinion and take part in discussion. That is perfect! Choose two or three phrases and try to use them this week to practise your new vocabulary!
